Akshay Kumar's Independence Day release this year, Gold, is unstoppable at the box office.
The sports drama directed by Reema Kagti raked in a staggering Rs 25.25 crore on its opening day to become the third highest opener this year, after Sanju and Race 3. It has also overtaken Singh Is Bliing (which earned Rs 20.67 crore on its first day) to become Akshay Kumar's highest opening film ever.
Gold witnessed a significant dip in its collection on its second day, given that it was a working day. The film earned Rs 8 crore on Thursday.
Gold is expected to have made Rs 10 crore on Friday, bringing its total collection to Rs 43.25 crore approx. The numbers are expected to increase over the weekend.
The film revolves around independent India's first Olympic gold win - a feat achieved by the Indian men's hockey team in 1948 at the 14th London Olympiad. Akshay plays the role of the manager of the team, Tapan Das.
It was a clash of the titans this year, as Gold locked horns with the other Independence Day release, John Abraham-starrer Satyameva Jayate, which also opened to a phenomenal response at the box office. While Gold raced ahead of Satyameva Jayate in multiplexes, the latter was popular in single screen theatres.
Gold, which marks the debut of television actress Mouni Roy, also starred Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Vineet Kumar Singh and Nikita Dutta in pivotal roles.
